Special Effects Makeup

Maggie Courtis

A pretty young girl has her face painted as though she is wearing a mardi-gras mask with peacock feathers across her forehead.

In this workshop you'll have the opportunity to learn the techniques and secrets for creating fabulous makeup, characters, and gore with products used by professionals in the entertainment industry. Students each receive a professional-grade beginning special effects makeup kit with all of the supplies you need to get started.

This course will teach you to make bruises, boils, cuts and gashes, road burn, bloody noses, black eyes, slit throats, protruding objects, and more. You'll learn how to combine latex with common household materials and cereals to get dimension and texture. We will sculpt and form your own, personally designed prosthetics. You'll use various tools and unusual sponges, also included in your kit.

Maggie learned to do special effects makeup when she owned Fright Night Scream Park, a haunted attraction, in Clovis. She was trained by the best artists in the industry, including:

  • Bobbie Weiner, aka Bloody Mary, who did the frozen effects on actors in The Titanic

  • The Wolfe Brothers, often called on to judge the annual International Face and Body Painting competition in Austria

  • Mark Reid, famous for his body painting, creating the look of jeans on the models

  • Bella Volen, world-renown, award-winning Austrian artist

  • Dutch Bihary, famous from Skin Wars

Besides the demonstrations, hands-on practice, and illustrations, you'll learn the best source to find more ideas and where to shop for professional grade products.

You'll leave this workshop empowered with skills and ideas to make this Halloween the best ever.
